Directions
Step 1: Prepare the Patties
- Place the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, salt and pepper in a bowl.
- With your hands, mix all together until combined.
- Form the mixture into oval patties.
- I usually make 5 or 6 depending on how hungry everybody looks.
Step 2: Brown patties
- Heat a pan over medium heat and brown the patties for a minute or two on each side.
- You don’t need to cook them completely here. Just give them a little color and taste.
- Honestly, this is a huge step.
Step 3: Assemble the slow cooker
- Spread onions and mushrooms on the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Arrange the patties on top.
- Mix beef broth and gravy mix and pour over patties.
Step 4: Cooking
- Cover and cook on LOW 5–6 hours.
- The onions should be soft, the gravy thickened, and the patties should be fork-tender.
- By the fourth hour your kitchen will smell good.
Small Kitchen Notes
- Mashed potatoes ought to be under this gravy. “I’m not going to argue.
- Add extra mushrooms if your family loves them.
- A dash of Worcestershire sauce adds even more flavor to the gravy.
- Serve with crusty bread, for mopping the plate afterwards.
Conclusion
And this recipe reminds me of the reason simple comfort food lasts for generations. It fills the kitchen with good smells, fills plates without breaking the bank, and somehow makes everyone slow down for a little while.
